Dormant bank accounts can be traced through the British Bankers Association. This involves filling in a form, either online, or it can be downloaded for a postal application. The BBA website also has a useful search facility to trace banks that no longer exist.

The Halifax and Bank of Scotland have their own scheme for tracing dormant accounts - http://www.halifaxlocateaccounts.co.uk.
