The Building Societies Association offers a service to trace old building society accounts. It is free service that covers every building society in the UK.
The following organisations are not covered, as they are now banks - Abbey National, Alliance & Leicester, Birmingham Midshires, Bradford & Bingley, Bristol & West, Cheltenham & Gloucester, Halifax, Leeds Permanent, National & Provincial, Northern Rock, TSB and Woolwich. Tracing old accounts with them can be done through the British Bankers Association.
